GiRRLZ: THE SELFIE ISSUE is a newspaper publication that explores the wide range of self-reflections in digital culture, aka the many forms of the selfie. It gives an historical overview, starting in a pre-selfie era where the first pre-historic selfies came to be, connecting it to painted selfies and the first photographed selfies, eventually resulting in the era of the first digital selfies, as we know them–when the innovation of photography and the development of the iPhone 4 came together, creating the ideal cultural setting for the founding of Instagram. This moment led to the peak of the Selfie, which was named the Oxford’s Dictionary Word of the Year in 2013.

This publication also focusses on the six functions of the selfie as introduced by Katrin Tiidenberg and eventually places an emphasis on the post-selfie era, as described by Tiidenberg–the era we’re in right now. A time that is marked by cultural, political shifts, resulting in the change of not our social worlds, but our digital ones as well.
